Family Run

We’re a small family run company made possible by the support of our family and friends. Our farm has provided us the opportunity to raise our two sons and given us the stability to participate in our community.

Hard Working

We are entirely hands-on from start to finish. We focus on quality over quantity. Every single mussel is handled and checked by our workers. We do our best so that our customers only receive the very best product.

Locally Proud

Our farm is located on Lasqueti Island, BC. We’re proud to be a part of the Canadian west coast shellfish aquaculture industry. We ship our Honey Mussels live to Vancouver BC every week.

The Farm

Where the mussels are grown that end up on your plate

Where is the farm located?

Sailor’s Seafoods Farm is located in a lagoon on Lasqueti Island, BC, Canada.

This lagoon is located 180km from Vancouver, BC.

What’s the farm like?

Grown in a Pristine Lagoon

This lagoon provides the perfect location for growing shellfish.

It’s protected from storms, so less equipment is needed. The daily tides provide more than enough nutrients shellfish require for healthy growth.

The lagoon hosts a complex and rich ecosystem. Our farm provides an artificial reef allowing wildlife to prosper.

Off The Grid

The farm is completely off the grid.

This makes farming substantially more challenging. Sailor and Lisa have had to come up with solutions to problems that conventional “on the grid” farmers don’t have. Solutions are required rather than large energy consuming machinery to ensure a quality product, from start to finish, when off the grid. Alternative energies like solar and hydro power are used to power parts of the farm activities.

In Balance with our Ecological Neighbours

We interact with nature on daily basis

Local Ecosystem

Our farm is surround by a rich ecosystem comprised of many plants and animals. The lagoon is hidden amongst acres of old growth forest. The lagoon provides refuge for many animals that depend on the ocean.

Sustainability

Sustainability is conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources.

Mussels require low use of marine resources and have minimal polluting impact.Well-managed farmed mussels are a "Best Choice" seafood offering. Mussel farming is endorsed by environmental and seafood-monitoring groups such as Ocean Wise, The Audubon Society, Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch, and Sea Choice.

Clean

Our Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program is one of the most stringent in the world. This ensures that our waters are monitored regularly to ensure the coastal waters are clean and our shellfish products are free of any toxins.

Our History

We have a rich family history with the water and land

Timeline of Sailor’s Seafoods

Development of the Honey Mussel™

Sailor’s Seafoods steadily innovated and helped create new technologies to grow shellfish. In 1999, Sailor, in association with brothers Gordon and Bruce Jones of Innovative Aquaculture Products, began selectively breeding mussels. After many years the final result was the Honey Mussels.
